FASHION, PERSONAL _ extremities and some good news

front of a top. i love basting, i do. :)

pattern.

hand on a sleeve. i love basting, but this one was made by my mom and ibolya.

the good news are that i again got through into
the finals of the "gombold újra" fashion design competition.
i think it's amazing that i (with a little help from
my mommy and her colleague ibolya) did it again.

practically everybody advised me against entering again this year.
first off because most of my family measures things in "payoffs".
and payoff to them means financial success. so if something doesn't
bring more money than what i invested then why would i do it.
no normal person would do it. at least that's what they think.
because last year it didn't get me any financial success
they thought that it would be a waste of time, energy and money.
they could not grasp that i did it for the work itself not money.

okay, i love my family and they love me too... they want to
protect me and they want to mold me into a proper citizen, which i'm not.
but they want to do that because they want to see me get along well
in this world. i do struggle in this society that demands that i be
a slave to it... but that's okay, i think. maybe i really should
work more and earn more money. my family is right. and i am
right, too, i think. my mommy always tries to stand by
my side, tho. :)

Another friend told me i should not enter because of the high probability
that i could not repeat last year's success... and i said, so what?
no problem if i can't repeat it...

i had to save money for the competition, there were even bills
i did not pay because i had to put aside the money for the fabrics...
i had to save off more that 500 bucks, which is actually a lot for
poor little me. and i did enter the competition. :) :)

and again i got through into the final round... yay! :D

i really think it's amazing.

this year the challenge was even more exciting because
it got broader in that we could choose from many
areas of inspiration. we could use practically anything from
the cultures and natures of 4 of Central Europe's countries.

we even got a pinterest board with loads of inspo:

i chose andré kertész' "distortions" series. some 200 photos that
he made in 1933 of two beautiful women through distorted mirrors.
a really, really surreal, really grotesque but no less beautiful series.
i find them breathtaking, funny, witty, and utterly modern.

we had to design 5 outfits that i'll post later.

above you can see some of them in the making.

there are 4 categories, and i'm in the "newcomer öltözék" one.
"öltözék" means clothing or outfit in hungarian. :)

i'm curious about what you think!

the jury decided already but they have to keep the decision secret
until june the 22nd, the day of the finals. it was supposed
to be held last saturday, the 8th, but they decided to
postpone it because of the flood.

see you soon.
hugs,
agnes

  1. oh my goodness agnes this is AMAZING! congratulations, you are SO talented! (i had a sneak peak of your designs on the official facebook page!)

i really admire you for powering forward and entering this - you knew you could do it! you do not need financial success to win - taking these extra projects on just pushes you to get better and better and you cant put a price to the exposure you will get! it always pays off in one way or another - never hesitate!!

good luck and i look forward to the results on june 22!!

  2. it's so sad that almost everything in fashion is about money. is expensive doing courses, buying supplies. i'm trying to start a little and independent fashion brand but i have no money and my parents have the same thoughts that yours :) ok , is for our good and we know it, but is harder without their support (not talking about money).
it's nice to see someone with talent talking about the reality and the difficult behind doing a little collection :) super encouraging!

your collection is amazing, be brave and keep pushing to become even better :) good luck!

    Rafa.

    1. Thanks for your words, Rafa. Starting something is never easy... as for learning design I'm very grateful for books... Books are relatively cheap and they can teach you a whole lot... But I agree it's a sad thing thing that starting a new business is so expensive not to mention risky... I don't know but it might be a good idea to start very small with just pieces rather than a brand... I don't know how that would come across to customers but it might as well work.

      :) :) Thanks for the encouragement! :) :)

  5. Dear Agnes, go and follow your heart!!! and i'm so glad to read this post, your so honest about it! maybe you know that i love to create and try to sell them, haven't earned any euro yet! but i follow my instinct and just try to do something else, which i'm working on right now at our cottage. there's no internet, so i completely focused on the things i want to do. Good luck, i will follow you!!!xxx

    1. Dearest Audrey, thanks for the sweet words! Yes, I know you create but I had no idea you didn't manage to earn money with it so far! It's good to hear you won't give up. Yes, do follow your instinct... You might need to consider what might sell but other than that just make things that you can fall in love with... you've got such great style. And no Internet is a very, very good idea!

  7. So 2 days ahead? You have such a talent, Agnes. Your collection is in my eyes very strong: not too much fuss, clean, artistic, great colors! Anyhow, I totally agree, it is good to have taking part again. What if you not win? The experience you are gaining is so worthy, you could almost pay for attending. If your collection is on sale, let me know, I am really interested.
Now, the 'bohemian' thing: I do understand both, your family and your point too. Probably things will fall naturally into the right path whenever you are ready to earn big money. I have no doubt about it! Let me know when you are ready:-)
